Hey folks! I know y’all have probably seen lots about Matter and Thread from us here at SparkFun lately, so let’s round everything up into a one-stop shop and take a look!
What is Matter/Thread?
In a nutshell, Matter is an open-source connectivity standard for smart home and IoT devices that accommodates both WiFi and Thread communication. By utilizing Thread, which is a low-power, IP-based mesh networking protocol, Matter devices do not require cloud integration, creating an isolated, private network for your home!

There’s also an amazing Tech Talk from Arm where we and our friends from SiLabs give an overview of what Matter is, its history, use cases, and all sorts of cool things, including a smart-home demonstration of Matter in action!
So, where does SparkFun come in?
We’ve been beyond excited to watch and learn as this technology has emerged, so when Silicon Labs approached us about coming together to create an easily accessible board that combines Matter with our Qwiic ecosystem, we leapt at the opportunity. The SparkFun Thing Plus Matter is paving the way for rapid development and prototyping of Matter-based IoT devices!

It’s hard to say just how much impact this technology will have, but we can say with confidence it’ll be a big one! Ultimately, the relationship between Matter and Thread will revolutionize the development of smart home technologies and boost their evolution, while simultaneously opening the door to innovation. Now it’s just a matter of waiting with bated breath as more and more of this technology emerges and grows in capability!
